The moment my husband called my name, my entire body went numb.
“Linda… how long have you been standing there?”
My heart racing, I slowly turned around. He was standing in the doorway, one hand still gripping the doorknob. His expression was unreadable—far too calm for someone who had just been caught discussing the sale of our family home behind his wife’s back.
“I heard enough,” I replied, my voice trembling. “You’re selling our house?”
For a few seconds, neither of us moved.
Then, to my surprise, he didn’t deny it.
Instead, he stepped aside and quietly said, “Come inside.”
A chill ran down my spine.
The study suddenly felt smaller than ever. Papers were scattered across the desk. His mother’s voice had disappeared from the phone call, but I could still see her name glowing on the screen. My stomach dropped as I noticed several documents spread out before him.
“Explain this,” I demanded.
He stared at me for a long moment before sliding a thick folder across the desk.
“Read it.”
My hands shook as I opened the file.
The first few pages looked like financial statements. Loan agreements. Bank notices. Collection warnings.
Then I saw a number.
I nearly stopped breathing.
The debt wasn’t thousands.
It wasn’t even tens of thousands.
It was hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Panic surged through me.
“How is this possible?” I whispered.
My husband rubbed his face. “Because this isn’t the first loan.”
I looked up sharply.
“What do you mean?”
His jaw tightened.
Before he could answer, my phone suddenly vibrated in my pocket.
Unknown Number.
I almost ignored it.
Almost.
Something told me to answer.
The moment I picked up, a woman’s voice spoke.
“Linda?”
I froze.
“Yes?”
There was a brief silence.
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
“Your husband hasn’t told you everything, has he?”
I looked directly at him.
His face instantly lost all color.
My heart pounded harder than ever.
“Who is this?” I demanded.
The woman let out a small laugh.
“Let’s just say… I’m the reason his mother owes that money.”
The room spun around me.
“What are you talking about?”
Another pause.
Then she dropped a sentence that shattered everything I thought I knew.
“You should ask your husband what happened three years ago… and why he promised never to tell you about me.”
My husband suddenly lunged forward.
“Hang up!” he shouted.
The fear in his voice was unlike anything I had ever heard.
The woman laughed again.
“Too late,” she said. “She deserves to know the truth.”
Before I could ask another question, the call disconnected.
Silence filled the room.
I slowly turned toward my husband.
His hands were shaking.
His eyes were fixed on the dark phone screen.
Then he whispered five words that made my stomach drop even further.
“She found us before I could.”
And at that exact moment, someone knocked on the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Then three more.
My husband’s face turned completely pale.
Because he already knew who was standing outside.
