The hidden door behind the bookshelf continued to open with a slow, grinding sound.
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t breathe.
My heart was racing so violently that I thought I might faint.
My husband stood perfectly still, watching me.
Smiling.
“Who… who’s in there?” I whispered.
His smile widened.
“Someone who’s been waiting a very long time to meet you.”
A chill ran down my spine.
The darkness behind the hidden doorway seemed endless.
Then I heard footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Deliberate.
My stomach dropped.
A figure emerged from the shadows.
An elderly woman.
Her silver hair hung loosely around her shoulders, and her pale eyes locked onto mine instantly.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then she smiled.
And somehow, that terrified me more than anything else.
“There she is,” she whispered.
The woman looked directly at my husband.
“She’s exactly like her.”
My entire body froze.
“Like who?” I demanded.
Neither of them answered.
Instead, my husband stepped forward and gently closed the notebook on the desk.
The notebook containing years of information about me.
Years.
Before we had ever met.
“You weren’t supposed to see this yet,” he said calmly.
“Then explain it!” I shouted.
Panic surged through me.
“Why do you have photographs of me from years ago? Who is she? What is going on?”
The old woman slowly approached.
I instinctively stepped backward.
She stopped only inches away.
Then she reached into her pocket and pulled out a faded photograph.
When she handed it to me, my hands started shaking.
The picture was old.
At least thirty years old.
Maybe older.
And standing beside the woman in the photograph…
Was someone who looked exactly like me.
Not similar.
Not resembling me.
Exactly.
Same face.
Same eyes.
Same smile.
My knees nearly gave out.
“This isn’t possible,” I whispered.
The woman tilted her head.
“That’s exactly what your mother said.”
Everything inside me stopped.
“My… mother?”
The woman nodded.
“She asked the same questions before she disappeared.”
The room suddenly felt ice cold.
I stared at her.
Then at my husband.
Then back at the photograph.
“What do you mean disappeared?”
Neither answered immediately.
Instead, my husband walked toward the hidden room and opened an old wooden cabinet.
Inside were dozens of files.
Each labeled with a woman’s name.
Each containing photographs.
Birth certificates.
Medical records.
Handwritten notes.
I felt sick.
“Who are these women?”
My husband slowly turned toward me.
“They’re all connected.”
“Connected how?”
He hesitated.
For the first time, his confidence seemed to crack.
The old woman answered instead.
“Because every one of them looked exactly like you.”
My vision blurred.
My breathing became shallow.
This had to be a nightmare.
It had to be.
Then something inside one of the folders caught my attention.
A photograph.
Recent.
Very recent.
Less than a month old.
I pulled it out.
The moment I saw it, my blood ran cold.
The picture showed me sleeping in my bed.
Taken from inside our bedroom.
Taken while I was asleep.
Taken only weeks ago.
I slowly lifted my eyes toward my husband.
He wasn’t smiling anymore.
Neither was the old woman.
Then a loud crash echoed somewhere upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Another crash followed.
This time louder.
The old woman’s face instantly turned pale.
“No…” she whispered.
My husband suddenly looked terrified.
Terrified.
For the first time all night.
“What is it?” I asked.
Neither answered.
Instead, they both stared toward the ceiling.
Then I heard it.
Footsteps.
Running across the floor above us.
But we were the only people living in the house.
Or at least…
That’s what I had always believed.
