PART 2 | My Best Friend Called Me at 2 AM, Begging Me to Come See My Wife in the ER Room. But I Was in Bed with My Mistress. “I’m Stuck in a Storm. Sign the Medical Consent for Me,” I Lied. I Abandoned Her to Die. I Didn’t Know That While I Was Drowning in My Own Filth, My Best Friend Didn’t Just Sign a Medical Form. He Signed Something Else. Something That Would Permanently Destroy the Empire I Stole from My Wife.

The next few days passed in a haze of hospital visits and board meetings. Elena slowly recovered, though the doctors warned of long-term damage. I played the devoted husband perfectly — bringing flowers, holding her hand, promising to cut back on work. All while Sophia waited in the wings and my secret accounts grew fatter.

Marcus had been unusually quiet at the office. When I finally cornered him, he looked exhausted.

“Richard, we need to talk about the night Elena was admitted,” he said, closing his office door. “The medical consent wasn’t the only document they asked me to sign. There was a power of attorney clause attached — standard emergency protocol for spouses who can’t be reached. I signed it on your behalf.”

My stomach dropped. “So what? It’s temporary. I’ll revoke it once she’s home.”

Marcus shook his head. “You don’t understand. Elena’s family lawyer was there. They had her original will and some old documents from when you first took control of the company. The power of attorney I signed gave her temporary authority over everything while she recovers. Including the ability to review and reverse certain transfers.”

A chill ran down my spine. Panic surged through me. “What the hell are you saying, Marcus?”

“She started moving this morning, Richard. Quietly. Some of the shell companies, the patents you reassigned to yourself… they’re being audited internally. She’s not as weak as she seems.”

I slammed my fist on his desk. “Fix this! You’re my lawyer. Undo it!”

“I can’t,” he replied, his voice low. “Not without exposing how you’ve been siphoning funds for years. And there’s more. While I was at the hospital, Elena woke up briefly. She asked me to witness something else — a new directive. I think she suspected something was wrong long before the heart attack.”

My blood ran cold. I rushed to the hospital, heart pounding wildly. Elena was sitting up in bed, looking stronger than she had any right to.

“Richard,” she said softly, her eyes meeting mine with surprising clarity. “The doctors say stress may have contributed to my episode. All those late nights you worked… all those business trips.”

I forced a smile, but my stomach was in knots. “You need to rest, darling. Don’t worry about the company. I’ve got it handled.”

She smiled back, but there was steel behind it. “I know you do. Marcus has been very helpful. He signed everything I needed.”

Later that evening, as I paced my office, my phone rang. It was the head of our finance department. “Mr. Kane, we have a problem. Several major assets are being frozen pending review. Your wife’s team initiated it under the emergency power of attorney.”

Panic surged through me like fire. I called Marcus again. “What exactly did you sign besides the consent form?”

He was quiet for a long moment. “The full package, Richard. Including a clause that activates if there’s evidence of marital misconduct or financial impropriety. Elena had been gathering evidence for months. The heart attack just accelerated everything.”

My world tilted. I had abandoned her to die, and in return, my best friend had helped her begin the process of destroying everything I had stolen.

That night, Sophia called me in tears. “Richard, someone just sent me photos of us together. They’re threatening to go public unless…”

Before she could finish, my office door opened. Elena stood there, supported by a nurse but standing tall, with Marcus right behind her.

“Richard,” she said calmly, “we need to talk about the empire. My empire.”

My heart raced as more documents appeared on my desk — divorce papers, asset separation notices, and a folder full of proof of my affair and embezzlement.

But as Elena’s eyes met mine with cold fury, my private line rang. An unknown voice spoke: “Mr. Kane, powerful people you’ve been doing business with are not happy about these audits. Fix your wife, or we’ll fix you permanently.”

Outside the window, dark vehicles pulled up. The real storm was only beginning.
