My heart was pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears. The woman — elegant, with sharp eyes — stared at me for a long second before turning to Alex.
“Darling, who is this?” she asked, her tone sweet but clearly laced with warning.
Alex looked tense. He quickly introduced her as his older sister, Emma, who was visiting from abroad. The relief I felt was short-lived. After Emma went back inside, Alex turned to me, his expression serious.
“I’m sorry about that,” he said quietly. “She’s protective. Five years ago, I went through a terrible divorce. My ex-wife almost destroyed me — financially and emotionally. Since then, I’ve kept to myself… until I met you.”
He reached across the balcony and gently touched my hand. A chill ran down my spine at the warmth of his touch. His voice dropped lower, full of hidden meaning:
“I meant what I said earlier. You look like someone who knows how to love deeply… and I want to show you how good it can feel to be loved the right way. No more waiting, Sarah. Come over tonight. Let me cook for you. Let me prove I’m serious.”
My mind was spinning. Part of me wanted to run away, but another part — the lonely part that had been waiting for years — felt drawn to him. I agreed nervously.
That night, inside his beautifully furnished apartment, the atmosphere was electric. We talked for hours. He was attentive, funny, and made me feel truly seen. As the night grew late, he pulled me closer on the couch and whispered:
“I’ve wanted this moment for months. But before we go any further… there’s one secret I have to tell you.”
My stomach twisted with anxiety. Just as he was about to speak, there was a loud knock on the door. Alex’s face turned pale. He opened it slightly, and I heard a man’s angry voice:
“Alex! I know she’s in there. You can’t hide forever. Your ex-wife sent me. She wants the money you promised, or she’ll tell everyone the real reason your marriage ended!”
Alex quickly closed the door and turned to me, panic in his eyes. My heart was racing with fear and confusion.
“Sarah… I can explain everything. But you have to trust me right now.”
