My daughter and I went to surprise my husband, but the secretary said “his family is already upstairs” while he smirked at me — so I made one phone call to the Chairman of the Board.

The silence that followed my phone call was heavy and suffocating. Mark let out a short, barking laugh, shaking his head as if I had just told a pathetic joke.

“Grandfather?” Mark mocked, gesturing to the woman beside him. “Still playing the orphan girl with imaginary rich relatives? Give it up, Elena. You were a charity case when I found you, and you’ll be a charity case when you leave.”

He signaled to the two security guards standing by the turnstiles. “Get her out of here. She’s trespassing and harassing my guests.”

The guards took a step forward, but they stopped dead when the main executive elevator chimed. This wasn’t the standard glass lift; it was the private gold-leafed car that only one person had the key to.

The doors slid open to reveal Arthur Vanderbilt, the reclusive billionaire and majority shareholder of the very firm Mark worked for. Behind him stood a small army of lawyers in charcoal suits, their faces grim.

“Grandfather,” I said, stepping forward as the guards scrambled to stand at attention. Arthur didn’t look at Mark. He walked straight to me and took my daughter into his arms.

“I told you he wasn’t worth the effort, Elena,” Arthur said, his voice booming through the lobby. “But you wanted to see if he could be a man of character. I think we have our answer.”

Mark’s face went from smug to a sickly shade of grey. The woman beside him took a frantic step back, her hand dropping from his arm as if he had suddenly caught fire.

“Mr. Vanderbilt?” Mark stammered, his voice cracking. “I… I didn’t know. Elena never mentioned… there’s been a massive misunderstanding.”

“There is no misunderstanding, Marcus,” Arthur said, finally turning his gaze toward my husband. “You are an employee of this firm. Or rather, you were. You were promoted today because my granddaughter asked me to give you a chance to prove your loyalty.”

I walked up to Mark, reaching out to straighten his tie one last time. He was shaking so violently that his teeth were literally chattering.

“I didn’t just buy you that suit, Mark,” I whispered so only he could hear. “I bought the building you’re standing in. I bought the car you drove this morning. I even bought the silence of the board members who were going to report your ‘travel expenses’ months ago.”

The secretary who had insulted me was now hiding behind her computer monitor, her face pale with terror. I looked at her and then back at the woman Mark had claimed was his “real” life.

“You can keep him,” I said to the woman. “But I hope you like the version of him that has a negative bank balance and a blacklisted resume. Because by sunset, that’s all that will be left.”

Arthur gestured to the lead lawyer. “Serve the papers. Termination for cause, morality clause violation, and a full freeze on all marital assets pending the divorce filing. Since he claims this other woman is his family, he won’t mind moving into her apartment tonight.”

Security, who moments ago were ready to throw me out, now flanked Mark. They didn’t lead him out; they held him there as the lawyers handed him a mountain of legal documents.

“Wait!” the woman screamed. “Mark told me he owned this place! He said he was the heir!”

I smiled, picking up the bouquet of lilies I had dropped earlier and handing them to the woman. “He’s an actor, honey. And the show just got canceled.”

I took my daughter from my grandfather’s arms and walked toward the exit. I didn’t look back when I heard Mark screaming my name, begging for a second chance.

As we reached the sidewalk, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders that I hadn’t even realized I was carrying. The empire was falling behind me, but for the first time in years, I was finally standing on solid ground.

“Where are we going, Mommy?” Lily asked, looking up at me with wide eyes.

“To find a new house, sweetie,” I said, kissing her forehead. “One where the doors only open for people who tell the truth.”
