The knocking came again.
BANG.
BANG.
BANG.
Daniel looked like he’d seen a ghost.
His face drained of color, and for the first time since he had returned to our lives, I saw genuine terror in his eyes.
“Who is it?” my son asked.
Daniel immediately stood up.
“No. Don’t open that door.”
His voice was trembling.
The warning only made me more suspicious.
For twenty-five years, this man had been absent. Now he suddenly appeared, claimed he was dying, hinted at a secret from the past, and panicked at the sight of a visitor?
My heart was racing.
“What aren’t you telling us?” I demanded.
Daniel opened his mouth, but before he could answer, the knocking became even louder.
BANG.
BANG.
BANG.
My son wheeled himself toward the entrance.
“Wait!” Daniel shouted.
But it was too late.
The door opened.
A tall man in an expensive suit stood outside.
Behind him were two black SUVs parked across the street.
The stranger’s eyes immediately locked onto Daniel.
“There you are.”
The chill that ran down my spine was instant.
Daniel looked ready to collapse.
The man stepped inside without waiting for an invitation.
“You’ve been difficult to find.”
My stomach dropped.
“Who are you?” I asked.
The stranger ignored me.
Instead, he reached into his briefcase and placed a thick envelope on the table.
Then he looked directly at my son.
“Everything inside belongs to you.”
The room fell silent.
My son frowned.
“What is this?”
The stranger hesitated.
Then he answered.
“Proof.”
Daniel suddenly slammed his hand onto the table.
“No!”
The outburst shocked everyone.
His breathing became erratic.
Panic surged across his face.
“You promised you wouldn’t involve them.”
The stranger laughed bitterly.
“You lost the right to make demands twenty-five years ago.”
My son slowly opened the envelope.
Inside were photographs.
Dozens of them.
Old photographs.
Some showed Daniel.
Others showed hospitals.
Lawyers.
Businessmen.
And then my son’s hands froze.
Because one photograph showed something impossible.
It was a picture taken just days after his birth.
A picture of me holding him in the hospital.
The problem was…
Daniel wasn’t in the photo.
Neither was I the one who had caught the stranger’s attention.
Standing in the background was a woman.
A woman neither of us recognized.
“What does this mean?” my son whispered.
The stranger looked directly at Daniel.
“Tell him.”
Daniel lowered his head.
His entire body was shaking.
“I never left because of the wheelchair.”
My breath caught in my throat.
“What?”
Tears filled Daniel’s eyes.
“I left because someone threatened to kill both of you.”
The room exploded into chaos.
I couldn’t process what I was hearing.
For twenty-five years, I had believed he abandoned us because he couldn’t handle raising a disabled child.
Now he was claiming something completely different.
My son stared at him in disbelief.
“You’re lying.”
“I wish I was.”
The stranger slowly nodded.
“It’s true.”
I felt dizzy.
Nothing made sense anymore.
Then the stranger reached into his jacket and pulled out another item.
A sealed letter.
Yellowed with age.
The paper looked decades old.
Daniel immediately recognized it.
His eyes widened in horror.
“No…”
The stranger placed the letter in front of my son.
“This was supposed to be delivered on your eighteenth birthday.”
My son’s hands trembled as he reached for it.
“What is it?”
The stranger swallowed.
“A confession.”
The room became deadly quiet.
Daniel suddenly lunged forward.
“Don’t open it!”
But my son had already broken the seal.
His eyes scanned the first few lines.
Then every drop of color vanished from his face.
His hands started shaking uncontrollably.
“What is it?” I asked desperately.
My son looked up at me.
Terror filled his eyes.
Then he whispered six words that made my blood run cold.
“Mom… you’re not who you think you are.”
