PART 2 | THE STRANGER WALKED INTO MY WIFE’S HOSPITAL ROOM, CLAIMED HE KNEW THE SECRET BEHIND OUR TWINS’ DIFFERENT SKIN TONES — AND THE PHOTO HE PULLED FROM HIS POCKET MADE MY HEART STOP

“I think it’s time he learned who we really are.”

The stranger’s words echoed through the hospital room like a thunderclap.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

My heart was racing so violently that I thought I might collapse beside the hospital bed.

“What the hell are you talking about?” I demanded.

The man didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he slowly reached into his jacket pocket.

My stomach dropped.

Every instinct told me something terrible was about to happen.

My wife sat frozen in bed, her face drained of color.

“Please…” she whispered. “Not here.”

Not here?

The words hit me harder than anything else.

She knew him.

Not only did she know him—she was terrified of him.

The stranger ignored her plea.

He pulled out an old photograph and handed it to me.

The second I looked down, a chill ran down my spine.

The photo showed my wife.

But it wasn’t recent.

She looked years younger.

Standing beside her were several people I had never seen before.

And cradled in her arms was a baby.

A baby that looked exactly like one of the twins lying in the hospital bassinet.

My hands started shaking.

“Who is this child?” I asked.

The room fell silent.

My wife began crying.

The stranger finally spoke.

“That’s because this isn’t the first time this has happened.”

My vision blurred.

“What does that mean?”

His expression darkened.

“It means your wife has been hiding something from you since before you met her.”

Panic surged through my body.

I turned toward my wife.

“Tell me he’s lying.”

She opened her mouth.

But no words came out.

Tears streamed down her face.

The stranger stepped closer.

“Ask her where she was thirteen years ago.”

My stomach twisted.

“Ask her why she changed her name.”

“What?!” I shouted.

The hospital room suddenly felt ice cold.

My wife looked at me with eyes filled with fear.

Not guilt.

Fear.

As if she had been waiting years for this exact moment.

Then she grabbed my wrist.

Hard.

So hard that her nails dug into my skin.

“You have to listen carefully,” she whispered.

“Everything he’s telling you is only half the truth.”

The stranger laughed.

A slow, unsettling laugh.

“Half the truth?” he said.

“You still haven’t told him about the other family.”

The other family.

My heart nearly stopped.

The babies suddenly began crying.

Hospital monitors started beeping.

Nurses rushed toward the room.

And in the middle of the chaos, my wife leaned close enough for only me to hear.

Then she whispered a single sentence into my ear.

A sentence so shocking that every hair on my body stood up.

Because it revealed that neither the stranger… nor the twins… were the biggest secret she had been hiding.
