The moment that hand landed on Ethan’s shoulder, every muscle in my body tensed.
I turned around slowly.
Standing behind us was my brother-in-law, Daniel.
His expression looked calm, almost friendly. But there was something unsettling in his eyes. Something cold.
“Ethan,” he said quietly, “your parents have been looking for you.”
My nephew immediately lowered his gaze.
I felt a chill run down my spine.
The boy who had been moments away from revealing the truth suddenly looked terrified.
“No,” I said firmly. “He was talking to me.”
Daniel forced a smile.
“I’m sure whatever it is can wait.”
His tone sounded polite.
His eyes did not.
For several long seconds, nobody moved.
Then Ethan whispered, barely loud enough for me to hear.
“It can’t wait.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
That tiny reaction lasted less than a second, but I saw it.
And suddenly, my stomach dropped.
What was he afraid Ethan would say?
The rest of the evening became unbearable.
Every conversation sounded distant. Every laugh from my relatives felt fake. I couldn’t stop watching Daniel.
And the strangest thing?
He never stopped watching me.
Whenever I glanced across the room, his eyes were already on me.
As if he knew exactly what Ethan had told me.
As if he knew what I was beginning to suspect.
Hours later, after most guests had left, I finally found Ethan alone near the driveway.
He looked nervous.
“Tell me now,” I pleaded.
“What happened that night?”
His hands shook.
“I saw Lily near the woods.”
I held my breath.
“Who was with her?”
Ethan swallowed.
“Uncle Daniel.”
My heart started racing.
“What were they doing?”
“They were arguing.”
I felt the ground disappear beneath me.
“Arguing?” I whispered.
“Lily looked upset.”
“About what?”
“I don’t know.”
The boy looked around anxiously.
“But I remember what she said.”
My pulse thundered in my ears.
“What did she say?”
Ethan’s voice cracked.
“She kept saying, ‘You lied to me.'”
I froze.
Those four words echoed inside my head.
You lied to me.
You lied to me.
You lied to me.
Daniel had always claimed he barely spoke to Lily that night.
So why had they been arguing in the woods?
And what had he lied about?
Before I could ask another question, Ethan reached into his pocket.
“I kept something.”
My breathing stopped.
“What?”
He slowly pulled out a small silver necklace.
The necklace.
Lily’s necklace.
The one police searched for years and never found.
Tears instantly filled my eyes.
“Where did you get that?”
Ethan looked sick.
“I found it the morning after she disappeared.”
“What?!”
“I was scared.”
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”
His answer made panic surge through me.
“Because Daniel saw me pick it up.”
Everything inside me went cold.
“What did he say?”
Ethan stared at the necklace.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he whispered the words that had haunted him for four years.
“He told me that if I ever mentioned what I saw, our family would be destroyed.”
I could barely breathe.
The threat sounded impossible.
Terrifying.
And somehow completely real.
Then Ethan handed me the necklace.
As I turned it over in my trembling hands, I noticed something I had never seen before.
A tiny folded piece of paper hidden inside the pendant.
My fingers shook as I opened it.
The handwriting belonged to Lily.
Without warning, a car engine roared to life nearby.
Headlights suddenly flooded the driveway.
Ethan’s face turned white.
He looked toward the road and whispered:
“Oh no…”
“What’s wrong?” I asked.
His eyes widened in horror.
“He’s not supposed to know about the note.”
