Sylvester Stallone has revealed one of the deepest sorrows of his life — that he never had the chance to hold his own grandchild. In a rare and emotional interview, the Hollywood legend opened up about the pain of losing his son Sage Stallone before he had the opportunity to become a grandfather. “It’s something I think about all the time,” he confessed quietly. “That moment — the one where I would’ve held my son’s child — it never came, and that’s a pain that never leaves.”

Stallone, who has always been open about his grief over Sage’s passing in 2012, said that as he grows older, his sense of loss has taken on new layers. “When you lose a child, you lose a piece of your future,” he explained. “But when you realize you’ll never see that next generation — your son’s child — it’s like losing that future twice.”
The actor described how he often imagined what it would have been like to see Sage as a father. “He would’ve been amazing,” Stallone said, his voice heavy with emotion. “He had this gentle spirit, this sense of humor that could light up a room. I know he would’ve loved his child the way I loved him — with all his heart.”

Stallone said the thought of becoming a grandfather once filled him with hope, especially as he watched his other children grow up. “You start thinking about the circle of life, about passing things down — not fame, not money, but lessons, values, stories,” he shared. “That’s what I wanted to give to my grandchild. That’s what I wanted Sage to give.”
He admitted that he still finds himself daydreaming about what could have been — holidays, birthdays, quiet afternoons spent telling stories about Rocky and Rambo to a little one sitting on his lap. “I would’ve told them how brave their dad was, how much he loved to dream,” he said softly. “Just to have one of those moments would’ve meant everything.”
The actor revealed that the realization often hits him hardest when he sees friends or colleagues enjoying time with their grandchildren. “You smile for them,” he said, “but deep down, you feel this ache. Because you know that’s a kind of love you’ll never get to experience — at least not in this lifetime.”

Stallone’s daughters have often said their father becomes most emotional when talking about Sage, and even more so when he speaks about what could have been. “We know he carries that pain with him,” one of them shared. “He misses the future he never got to see.”
Despite the sorrow, Stallone said he tries to focus on gratitude — for the years he had with Sage and for the lessons fatherhood taught him. “I remind myself that I was lucky to have him at all,” he said. “Some people never get to know love that deep. I did. And that’s what keeps me going.”
He revealed that sometimes, late at night, he imagines Sage’s child — the grandchild that never was — and speaks to them in his heart. “I tell them who their father was,” he said. “I tell them he was kind, he was brave, he was everything I could’ve hoped for in a son.”

For Stallone, the absence of that next generation is a wound that will never fully heal. “You dream of watching your family continue — that’s what gives life meaning,” he said quietly. “But when that dream ends too soon, all you can do is hold on to love. Love is the only thing that time can’t take.”
With tears in his eyes, Stallone concluded, “If there’s a heaven — and I believe there is — maybe one day I’ll get to hold that child after all. Until then, I carry them both — my son and the grandchild I never met — right here,” he said, placing his hand over his heart.
