Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, has formally announced that he will give up his titles following a “discussion with the King.” The decision marks a defining moment for the British royal family, reflecting the growing pressure surrounding the prince and his public image.
In an official statement, Prince Andrew said that the “continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family.” He added that stepping back and relinquishing his titles was the most appropriate way to preserve the dignity and focus of the monarchy.
According to Buckingham Palace, Andrew will remain a prince by birth, but will no longer hold the title “Duke of York.” The dukedom was originally granted to him by his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in 1986, on the occasion of his marriage to Sarah Ferguson.

The controversy stems from his association with the late American financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Several of Epstein’s victims have claimed that they were abused as minors and that the prince had involvement, accusations he has repeatedly denied.
Although Andrew has not faced any criminal charges, he was sued in a U.S. civil case by Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s accusers. In 2022, the prince reached an out-of-court settlement with Giuffre while maintaining his innocence. The financial terms were not disclosed but were reported to be in the millions of pounds.
Following the settlement, Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Andrew would step back from all public duties and would no longer use the title “His Royal Highness” in any official capacity. However, his retention of the Duke of York title continued to provoke controversy among both the public and members of Parliament.
