The moment I saw who was standing there, my heart nearly stopped.
It was my daughter.
For a split second, relief washed over me.
But that relief vanished the instant I looked at Daniel.
His face had turned ghostly white.
His hands were trembling.
And his eyes weren’t fixed on my daughter.
They were focused on someone standing behind her.
A chill ran down my spine.
Slowly, I looked past her shoulder.
My sister.
The woman who had helped me raise my daughter.
The woman I trusted more than almost anyone in the world.
The woman who had been sitting in the front row of the wedding just hours earlier.
She was smiling.
But there was something deeply unsettling about that smile.
Something that made my stomach drop.
“There you are,” she said calmly.
Her voice sounded pleasant.
Too pleasant.
Daniel instinctively stepped backward.
I had never seen fear like that in someone’s eyes.
Not even once.
My daughter glanced between us, completely confused.
“What’s going on?” she asked.
Nobody answered.
The silence became unbearable.
Finally, my sister laughed softly.
“You look like you’ve seen a ghost, Daniel.”
His jaw tightened.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
The words escaped his mouth before he could stop them.
My daughter frowned.
“What does that mean? Of course she’s here. She’s family.”
Family.
The word seemed to hang heavily in the air.
My sister slowly walked toward us.
Each step made my pulse race faster.
Then her eyes drifted toward the envelope still clutched in Daniel’s hand.
The smile disappeared instantly.
“What is that?” she asked.
Daniel didn’t answer.
Instead, he slipped the envelope behind his back.
The reaction was immediate.
For the first time all evening, my sister looked nervous.
Very nervous.
And that terrified me more than anything else.
My daughter noticed it too.
“Mom?” she whispered. “Why is everyone acting so strange?”
I wanted to tell her.
I wanted to reveal everything.
But I didn’t even know the truth myself.
Not yet.
Daniel swallowed hard.
Then he turned to me.
“You need to read it.”
His voice was barely audible.
“Read it before she gets it.”
My sister’s expression darkened.
“Daniel.”
The warning in her voice was unmistakable.
Panic surged through me.
I grabbed the envelope.
Immediately, my sister lunged forward.
“Give me that!”
The sudden outburst shocked all of us.
Including my daughter.
For years, I had never seen her lose control.
Not once.
Yet now she looked desperate.
Almost terrified.
The envelope slipped from my hands and landed on the floor.
Several yellowed photographs spilled out.
Everyone froze.
My daughter bent down first.
Before anyone could stop her, she picked up one of the photographs.
Her eyes widened.
“What is this?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
My sister looked like she was about to collapse.
My hands shook violently as I took the photograph from my daughter.
The image showed something impossible.
Something that made my blood run cold.
It was a photograph taken more than twenty-five years ago.
And standing beside a much younger version of my sister…
Was Daniel.
The exact same Daniel.
Not older.
Not younger.
Exactly the same.
My daughter stared at him in horror.
“How is this possible?”
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Then she picked up another photograph.
And another.
Each one was older than the last.
Yet Daniel never seemed to age.
A chill ran down my spine.
My daughter looked at him as if she no longer recognized the man she had just married.
Finally, with tears forming in her eyes, she whispered the question all of us were thinking.
“Who are you?”
Daniel opened his mouth to answer.
But before a single word could leave his lips, a loud crash echoed from the ballroom.
The lights suddenly went out.
The entire building plunged into darkness.
And from somewhere in the blackness, a voice whispered—
“Don’t tell them.”
