“You were never supposed to see that.”
The words hung in the air like a death sentence.
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
My heart was racing so violently that I could hear it pounding inside my ears.
Daniel stood in the doorway, his face partially hidden in the darkness of the hallway. He wasn’t yelling. He wasn’t angry.
That terrified me even more.
Slowly, he stepped toward me.
I instinctively slammed the laptop shut.
“What is this?” I demanded, my voice shaking. “Who was that woman? What were you doing in Emma’s room?”
Daniel’s eyes locked onto mine.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
The silence felt unbearable.
Then he sighed.
“You don’t understand.”
A chill ran down my spine.
“Then explain it!” I shouted.
Instead of answering, he reached for the laptop.
I immediately pulled it closer.
“Don’t touch it.”
Something flashed across his face.
Fear.
Not guilt.
Fear.
And somehow, that made everything worse.
My stomach dropped.
Because if Daniel wasn’t afraid of being exposed…
Then what exactly was he afraid of?
Suddenly, a loud vibration echoed across the desk.
Both of us froze.
My phone.
An unknown number.
The screen displayed a single text message.
WATCH THE REST OF THE VIDEO BEFORE HE STOPS YOU.
Panic surged through me.
Daniel saw it too.
His face instantly turned pale.
“Delete that message,” he said.
“Who sent it?”
“Delete it. Now.”
The urgency in his voice sent another chill down my spine.
I had never seen him like this before.
Not when Emma died.
Not during the funeral.
Not ever.
Before I could respond, another message appeared.
THIS ISN’T ABOUT YOUR HUSBAND.
IT’S ABOUT YOUR DAUGHTER.
My entire body went numb.
“What does that mean?” I whispered.
Daniel closed his eyes.
For a second, he looked completely defeated.
Then he said something that shattered every assumption I had made.
“Emma wasn’t supposed to die.”
The room spun around me.
“What did you just say?”
He opened his mouth to answer.
But before he could speak, a loud crash exploded downstairs.
Both of us jumped.
Someone had just broken into the house.
Heavy footsteps echoed from the first floor.
One step.
Then another.
Then another.
Daniel immediately rushed toward the hallway.
His face drained of all color.
“No,” he muttered.
“No, no, no…”
I stared at him.
“Who is it?”
His answer made my blood run cold.
“The woman from the video.”
At that exact moment, a female voice drifted up from downstairs.
Calm.
Cold.
And terrifyingly familiar.
“Sarah,” she called.
“I know you’re awake.”
My heart nearly stopped.
Because I finally recognized the voice.
It was the nurse who had given me the flash drive.
And she sounded absolutely terrified.
“Don’t trust your husband,” she screamed.
“HE FOUND OUT I’M HERE—”
The rest of her warning was cut off by a loud scream.
Then complete silence.
And from downstairs, I heard something slowly begin climbing the stairs toward us…
