The moment I heard Daniel’s voice behind me, every muscle in my body froze.
“Who gave you that flash drive?”
My heart was racing so hard I thought he could hear it.
Slowly, I turned around.
Daniel stood in the doorway, his face hidden in the shadows. For a brief second, I saw something in his eyes I had never seen before.
Fear.
Not grief.
Not sadness.
Fear.
I quickly closed the laptop screen.
“What are you talking about?” I asked.
His jaw tightened.
“Don’t lie to me.”
A chill ran down my spine.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
The air felt heavier.
Daniel took a step forward.
Then another.
“I asked you a question.”
Panic surged through me.
The man standing in front of me no longer felt like the husband I had spent ten years with.
He felt like a stranger.
I swallowed hard.
“A nurse gave it to me after the funeral.”
For a moment, Daniel’s face turned completely pale.
He looked away and muttered something under his breath.
“What did you say?” I asked.
His eyes snapped back toward me.
“Nothing.”
But I knew he was lying.
I could feel it.
The same way I had felt something was wrong ever since Emily died.
“Who was the doctor?” I demanded.
Daniel remained silent.
“The man in the video. Why were you meeting him?”
Still silence.
Then he suddenly laughed.
Not because something was funny.
It was the nervous laugh of someone cornered.
“You don’t understand what you’re seeing.”
My stomach dropped.
“Then explain it.”
His expression darkened.
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Because if I tell you the truth…” he whispered.
His voice cracked.
“…everything will fall apart.”
I stared at him.
“What truth?”
Daniel rubbed his face and sat down heavily.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he finally looked up.
And what he said next shattered my reality.
“Emily wasn’t supposed to die.”
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“What?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Her condition wasn’t what they told us.”
The room began spinning.
I grabbed the edge of my desk to steady myself.
“What are you talking about?”
Daniel opened his mouth.
But before he could answer, a loud notification suddenly appeared on my laptop screen.
Both of us looked toward it.
An email.
No sender name.
No subject line.
Just one attachment.
And a single sentence.
“HE’S STILL LYING. WATCH THIS BEFORE HE DELETES IT.”
My heart nearly stopped.
Daniel lunged toward the laptop.
“No!”
I pulled it away from him.
For the first time all night, genuine terror appeared in his eyes.
“Don’t open that file,” he shouted.
“Why not?”
His breathing became erratic.
Because whatever was inside that attachment clearly terrified him.
I clicked on the file.
A video began loading.
The timestamp was from the night before Emily died.
The footage showed the hospital parking garage.
A black SUV pulled into a secluded corner.
A man stepped out.
Then another.
Then the camera zoomed in.
My breath caught in my throat.
One of them was the doctor from the original video.
The other man…
The other man looked exactly like Daniel.
But it wasn’t Daniel.
Or at least…
It couldn’t be.
Because at that exact moment, Daniel was standing right beside me.
I slowly turned my head toward him.
His face had gone completely white.
Then he whispered five words that made a chill run down my spine.
“You were never supposed to see that.”
