PART 2 | THE WOMAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD STEPPED OUT OF THE SHADOWS — AND THE FIRST WORDS SHE SPOKE MADE VICTOR TURN WHITE AS A GHOST!

For a moment, nobody moved.

The entire room seemed frozen in time.

My heart was racing so hard that I could hear the pounding in my ears. The woman slowly stepped forward into the light, and the breath caught in my throat.

She looked exactly like the portrait.

The same eyes.

The same face.

The same elegant posture.

The woman Victor had supposedly buried ten years ago.

Victor staggered backward.

“That’s impossible…” he whispered.

A chill ran down my spine.

The woman smiled.

“You always did underestimate me, Victor.”

The servant beside the door looked terrified. His hands were shaking so badly he nearly dropped the papers he was carrying.

I turned toward Victor.

“You told me she was dead.”

Victor didn’t answer.

For the first time since I met him, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.

The woman took another step closer.

“Oh, he lied about much more than that.”

My stomach dropped.

“What do you mean?”

She looked directly at me.

“Did he tell you why he chose you?”

Panic surged through me.

“No.”

The woman laughed softly.

“Of course he didn’t.”

Victor suddenly slammed his fist against the desk.

“Enough!”

The sound made me jump.

“Leave this house immediately,” he growled.

The woman didn’t even flinch.

Instead, she reached into her handbag and removed a yellowed envelope.

My eyes widened.

Across the front was my name.

My full name.

Written in handwriting I had never seen before.

Victor’s face instantly drained of color.

“Where did you get that?” he demanded.

The woman tilted her head.

“You know exactly where.”

I grabbed the edge of the desk for support.

“What is happening?”

The woman slowly held out the envelope toward me.

“This contains the truth about your mother.”

Everything inside me stopped.

My mother?

The mother who died when I was only six years old?

I could barely speak.

“What does my mother have to do with any of this?”

The woman looked at Victor before answering.

“Everything.”

My knees nearly gave out.

The room spun around me.

Victor rushed forward.

“Don’t open it!” he shouted.

The woman immediately pulled the envelope back.

“See?” she said softly. “That’s the first honest reaction he’s had all night.”

Victor’s breathing became heavier.

His eyes locked onto mine.

“Listen to me carefully,” he said.

There was something desperate in his voice now.

“If you open that envelope, your life will never be the same.”

I swallowed hard.

The woman answered before I could.

“She’s right about one thing.”

Victor frowned.

The woman smiled coldly.

“Your life will never be the same.”

Then she placed the envelope into my trembling hands.

My fingers touched the seal.

My heart was racing.

My hands shook uncontrollably.

Slowly, I began to tear it open.

But before I could read a single word, a gunshot suddenly echoed through the mansion.

BOOM.

The study windows exploded inward.

Glass shattered everywhere.

I screamed.

The lights instantly went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

And somewhere in the chaos, I heard a man’s voice shout:

“GET HER OUT OF HERE BEFORE SHE FINDS OUT WHO SHE REALLY IS!”
