The room fell completely silent.
I couldn’t even breathe as everyone turned toward the doorway. My heart was racing so hard it felt like it might burst from my chest. Standing there was an elegant older woman wearing a dark coat, her face pale but determined. The moment Vanessa saw her, she let out a terrified gasp.
“No… not her,” Vanessa whispered.
A chill ran down my spine.
The stranger with the envelope narrowed his eyes. “You finally decided to show up.”
My husband looked confused. “Can somebody tell me what’s going on?”
Nobody answered immediately.
The older woman slowly stepped forward and stared directly at Vanessa.
“You should have told him the truth months ago,” she said.
Vanessa’s hands began shaking uncontrollably.
My husband turned to his mistress. “What truth?”
His voice was no longer confident. The arrogance that had filled the room only minutes earlier was gone. For the first time that evening, he looked afraid.
The woman reached into her purse and pulled out a photograph.
When she placed it on the table, Vanessa immediately burst into tears.
My stomach dropped.
“What is that?” my husband demanded.
The older woman swallowed hard.
“It’s the reason everything is about to fall apart.”
Panic surged through the room.
My father stood up. My mother covered her mouth. Even my husband’s parents looked like they were about to faint.
The stranger opened the envelope wider, revealing dozens of documents, bank statements, legal papers, and photographs.
My husband grabbed one page.
As he scanned the contents, the color drained from his face.
“That’s impossible,” he whispered.
Vanessa suddenly lunged toward him.
“Don’t read the rest!” she screamed.
But it was too late.
His hands were trembling now.
“What have you done?” he asked.
The fear in his voice sent another chill down my spine.
The older woman looked at me.
“I am so sorry,” she said quietly.
“For what?” I asked.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“For what they planned to do to you.”
The entire room exploded with questions.
My husband looked completely lost.
“What plan?” he shouted.
The stranger pointed toward the stack of documents.
“Read page fourteen.”
My husband flipped through the papers frantically.
The second he found that page, his jaw dropped.
His breathing became heavy.
Then he slowly turned toward Vanessa.
The expression on his face wasn’t anger anymore.
It was horror.
“You told me the baby was mine,” he whispered.
Vanessa immediately looked away.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
And then, just as my husband opened his mouth to reveal what was written on page fourteen, someone outside the house began pounding violently on the front door.
BANG.
BANG.
BANG.
Every person at the table jumped.
A deep voice echoed from the other side.
“Open the door.”
The stranger with the envelope went completely pale.
The older woman started trembling.
And when I heard the voice call out Vanessa’s real name instead of the name we’d all known her by…
I realized the nightmare was far from over.
