PART 2 | MY HUSBAND REFUSED TO DRIVE ME HOME FROM THE HOSPITAL WITH OUR NEWBORN BECAUSE HE WAS AFRAID THE BABY MIGHT “DESTROY HIS CAR”—THE STRANGER AT THE DOOR KNEW A SECRET THAT COULD DESTROY HIS ENTIRE LIFE, AND HIS NEXT WORDS MADE MY HEART STOP!

“How did HE find me?”

The moment those words left Derek’s mouth, every ounce of color vanished from his face.

I had never seen my husband look afraid before.

Not when he lost his job three years ago.

Not when we nearly lost our apartment.

Not even when I went into labor two weeks early.

But now?

He looked terrified.

My heart was racing as I turned toward the man standing in the doorway.

He appeared to be in his late fifties, dressed in a dark suit, holding a worn leather briefcase. His eyes never left Derek.

The silence was unbearable.

Then Grandma Evelyn spoke.

“You’re late.”

The stranger nodded.

“I came as soon as I received your call.”

My stomach dropped.

Call?

Grandma had called this man?

Derek took a step backward.

“No. You can’t do this.”

His voice sounded desperate.

The stranger slowly opened his briefcase.

“I didn’t come here to do anything, Derek,” he said calmly. “I came because the truth has been hidden long enough.”

A chill ran down my spine.

“What truth?” I asked.

Nobody answered.

Instead, Grandma Evelyn handed me the envelope.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Old photographs.

Photographs of Derek as a child.

But something was wrong.

Very wrong.

The man standing beside him in every picture wasn’t his father.

It was the stranger.

I looked up.

“What is this?”

Derek immediately lunged toward me.

“Don’t look at those!”

His sudden reaction sent panic surging through me.

The nurse stepped between us.

For the first time, I saw genuine fear in Derek’s eyes.

The stranger sighed heavily.

“I didn’t want it to happen this way.”

“Then leave!” Derek shouted.

But Grandma Evelyn slammed her cane against the floor.

The sharp crack echoed through the room.

“No.”

Everyone froze.

She pointed directly at Derek.

“For twenty years, I’ve protected you.”

Then she pointed toward me and my newborn daughter.

“But the moment you abandoned your wife and child over a car, I realized I was protecting the wrong person.”

Derek looked like he might collapse.

My heart pounded harder.

“What is going on?” I whispered.

Grandma Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because the man who raised Derek wasn’t his father.”

The room erupted with gasps.

I couldn’t breathe.

The stranger lowered his head.

And then Grandma said something that made my blood run cold.

“The real reason Derek never wanted anyone digging into our family history is because he has known the truth for years.”

Derek’s jaw dropped.

“Grandma!”

But she wasn’t finished.

“He also knows why his real father disappeared.”

The stranger’s expression changed instantly.

Fear.

Regret.

Pain.

Something terrible was hiding beneath this story.

Something nobody wanted to say aloud.

Then Derek suddenly turned toward the door.

For a split second, it looked like he was about to run.

Instead, he stared past all of us.

His eyes widened.

His face turned white.

I followed his gaze.

Another person had just arrived.

A woman.

She stood at the end of the hallway clutching a folder thick with documents.

The second she saw Derek, she smiled.

Not kindly.

Not warmly.

It was the kind of smile that promised disaster.

Then she raised the folder and said:

“Since everyone is finally telling the truth, I suppose it’s time they learn what Derek did five years ago.”

The folder slipped from her hands.

Dozens of papers scattered across the hospital floor.

And at the very top was a document with Derek’s signature beside a number so large it made my stomach drop.
