My breath caught in my throat as the woman slowly removed a photograph from her purse.
The hospital room felt suffocatingly small.
Ethan’s face had turned ghostly pale.
His hands trembled.
And for the first time in our entire marriage, I saw genuine terror in his eyes.
“Don’t,” he whispered.
The woman ignored him.
She walked toward me and handed me the photograph.
My fingers shook as I looked down.
The moment I saw it, my stomach dropped.
It was Ethan.
Standing beside the same woman.
They were smiling.
Close.
Far too close.
But that wasn’t what made my heart nearly stop.
Standing between them was my daughter, Lily.
All three of them looked like a family.
A chill ran down my spine.
“What is this?” I demanded.
The woman tilted her head.
“That’s a very good question.”
Ethan suddenly sat up.
“Claire, please don’t listen to her.”
“Then explain it!” I shouted.
The nurse station outside seemed miles away.
The room was silent except for the frantic pounding of my own heart.
The woman crossed her arms.
“He won’t tell you the truth.”
“Enough!” Ethan snapped.
His voice startled all of us.
I had never heard him sound that desperate before.
The woman laughed softly.
“You still think you can hide it?”
Hide what?
My mind raced through a thousand horrifying possibilities.
An affair.
A secret second family.
Years of lies.
I could barely breathe.
Then Lily tugged on my sleeve.
“Mommy…”
I looked down.
Her innocent face somehow made everything feel worse.
“The lady from the picture is nice.”
The room spun.
“How long have you known her?” I asked.
Lily thought for a moment.
“Since last summer.”
Last summer.
Nearly a year.
My knees felt weak.
I turned back toward Ethan.
His eyes filled with panic.
But before he could speak, the woman dropped another bombshell.
“You think finding out about me is bad?”
My heart was racing.
“What are you talking about?”
She looked directly at Ethan.
Then back at me.
“The truth is… I’m not the biggest secret he’s been hiding.”
A cold wave washed over me.
“What does that mean?”
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then she reached into her purse again.
This time she pulled out a thick manila envelope.
Ethan immediately lunged forward.
“No!”
The scream echoed through the room.
Several nurses turned toward the doorway.
The woman stepped back.
Her smile disappeared.
“You should have told her yourself.”
My hands trembled as she held the envelope toward me.
Across the front, written in bold black marker, were three words:
CONFIDENTIAL DNA RESULTS.
I felt my stomach twist.
My heart nearly exploded inside my chest.
“What DNA results?” I whispered.
The woman looked at Lily.
Then she looked back at me.
And what she said next made the entire room fall silent.
“They aren’t about Ethan.”
My blood ran cold.
Slowly, she pointed toward my daughter.
And before anyone could stop her, she opened the envelope…
