My hands were shaking as I drove home that night, Elena’s words echoing in my head. “I want a baby… Will you help?” What did that even mean? Was she talking about a donor arrangement, a relationship, or something far more complicated? I tossed and turned all night, Mia’s soft breathing from the next room reminding me of everything I had to protect. By morning, exhaustion weighed on me like lead, but I couldn’t stop thinking about her offer. A life without crushing debt? Better opportunities for Mia? It sounded too good to be true.

The next day, Elena texted me to meet her at a quiet café near the waterfront. My heart was pounding the entire drive. When I arrived, she was already there, dressed casually in jeans and a sweater that made her look more approachable than the untouchable CEO I’d met before. She smiled warmly as I sat down, but I could see the tension in her eyes.
“Alex, I’m sorry for springing that on you yesterday,” she said softly, reaching across the table. “After my divorce, doctors told me time is running out for me to have a child naturally. I’ve dated powerful men, but none of them wanted real commitment. You… you’re different. You understand sacrifice and love. I’ve had a background check done—nothing invasive, just to know you’re the good man I think you are.” A chill ran down my spine again. Background check? This was moving way too fast.
We talked for hours. She opened up about her lonely climb to the top, the pressure of being a woman in tech, and her deep desire to be a mother. I shared stories about Mia, how she looked just like her mom, and the fear I carried every day that I wasn’t enough. Her hand found mine again, and for the first time in years, I felt seen. My stomach fluttered with a mix of fear and unexpected hope.
Then came the twist I never saw coming. “I don’t just want a donor,” she confessed, her voice trembling slightly. “I want us to try this together—as partners. I’m falling for you, Alex. The way you talk about Mia… it makes me believe we could build something beautiful.” Tears welled in her eyes. My heart raced so hard I thought it might burst. This powerful, wealthy woman wanted me? It flipped my entire world upside down. We spent the afternoon walking along the waterfront, laughing, sharing dreams. She even insisted on buying Mia a new backpack and some asthma medication. For a moment, it felt like a fairytale.

But as the sun began to set, her expression changed. She pulled me close in the parking lot. “There’s something I haven’t told you yet. My ex-husband… he’s dangerous. He’s been threatening me since the divorce, saying if I ever have a child with someone else, he’ll make sure I lose everything. I think he’s been following both of us.” Panic surged through me. I pulled back, my mind reeling. “Elena, we need to go to the police—”
Before I could finish, her phone rang. She answered, and her face went pale. “He knows,” she whispered, handing me the phone. A distorted voice on the other end growled, “You think you can play house with that nobody? Touch her and the girl pays the price.” My blood turned to ice. I spun around, scanning the area, and caught a glimpse of a man in a dark coat ducking behind a building across the street.
Elena gripped my arm tightly. “Alex, I’m scared. But I need you now more than ever. If we’re going to do this, we have to be careful. Come to my penthouse tonight. We’ll figure this out together…” As we drove off in her luxury car, headlights appeared in the rearview mirror, following us a little too closely. My stomach dropped. Whatever was coming next felt darker than I could have imagined.
