The rooftop pool area, once peaceful, now felt like a trap. My heart pounded so hard I could hear it in my ears as the suited man and Sarah’s colleague approached. Jessica stayed close to me, her hand still in mine, but her body trembled slightly.
“What is this?” I demanded, panic surging through every vein. “Who are you people?”
The colleague, a slick guy named Marcus I had met once at a company party, smirked. “David, relax. This is bigger than a midnight swim. Jessica here was supposed to get close to you tonight. Gather some… information.”
My stomach dropped completely. I turned to Jessica. “What does he mean?”
She looked torn, tears glistening in her eyes. “David, it’s not what you think. Sarah asked me to check on you because she suspects you’ve been distant. But then… I couldn’t go through with the rest of it. The flirting was real. My feelings are real.”
Marcus laughed. “Nice try, Jess. We have the recordings from the pool cameras. Sarah wanted proof you were unfaithful so she could push for full custody and the house in the divorce. But it seems Jessica went off script.”
A chill ran down my spine. Divorce? Sarah had been planning this? The late nights, the “work trips,” the emotional distance — it all started clicking into place.
Jessica stepped protectively in front of me. “Marcus, stop. This has gone too far. David doesn’t deserve this. Sarah’s the one who’s been having an affair with your boss for months.”
Marcus’s face hardened. “Careful, Jess. You’re replaceable.”
I pulled Jessica back, my mind reeling. “Both of you, explain everything right now.”
We moved to a corner lounge area as more hotel security appeared, but Marcus waved them off — clearly he had influence. There, under the moonlight, Jessica confessed more. “Sarah and I have been best friends, but she’s changed. The affair started a year ago. She wanted me to tempt you so she’d have leverage. But being here with you tonight… I realized I couldn’t hurt you. I’ve had real feelings for years.”
My heart raced with a confusing mix of betrayal, anger, and something dangerously close to attraction toward Jessica. “This is insane. I need to call Sarah.”
Before I could dial, my phone lit up with a text from Sarah: “I know Jessica is there. Don’t do anything stupid. We need to talk when you get home.”
Marcus stood up. “See? She’s watching. Now, David, you can play along, get some nice compensation in the divorce, or we make this very ugly for everyone.”
Jessica grabbed my arm again. “Don’t listen to him. Come with me. I have proof of her affair — messages, hotel receipts. We can fight this together.”
As we hurried toward the elevators, trying to escape the growing group, another figure stepped out from the shadows near the pool bar. It was Sarah’s sister, holding a folder.
“Jess was telling the truth about one thing,” she said coldly. “But there’s more. The affair isn’t the only secret. Sarah’s been moving money… and there’s a child involved from the other man.”
My world tilted violently. A child? Panic surged as Sarah’s sister handed me the folder. Inside were photos and documents that made my blood run cold.
Just as we reached the lobby level, hotel security surrounded us at Marcus’s signal. Jessica whispered urgently in my ear, “David, there’s one more truth I haven’t told you. About why I really came tonight. It’s not just about Sarah…”
Before she could finish, bright lights flooded the lobby. A news crew had arrived — tipped off by someone. Cameras rolled as Sarah herself walked in through the front doors, her face a mask of fury and calculated tears.
“David! How could you?” she cried loudly for the cameras.
But Jessica held my hand tighter, pulling me toward a side exit. “Trust me. The full truth will destroy her… but it might destroy us too.”
Outside in the humid Miami night, more cars pulled up. Headlights blinded us. One of the vehicles belonged to the man Sarah was apparently involved with — a powerful investor….
