I hung up on Rachel, my blood running cold. Emily’s hand was still on my arm, trembling. The confession hung between us like smoke— she had feelings for me, and there was more. Something Rachel had forced her to hide.

“Tell me everything,” I said, my voice low. My heart was racing so hard it hurt.
Emily took a deep breath. “Rachel was cheating on you for over a year before the divorce. With her boss. I found out and confronted her. She threatened to cut me off completely if I told you. But that’s not the worst part.”
She paused, tears filling her eyes. “There was a pregnancy. She got rid of it because it wasn’t yours. She blamed the stress of your marriage, but it was her affair. I helped her through it because I was scared and stupid and loyal to her. I’ve carried that guilt for years. That’s why I texted you tonight. I couldn’t keep pretending.”
My stomach dropped completely. The room spun. All the fights, the accusations, the way Rachel had painted me as the problem—it was all a lie. Panic surged through me as the weight of those lost years crashed down.
Before I could respond, a sharp knock sounded at the door. Rachel’s voice carried through. “Mark! Open up. Emily, I know you’re in there.”
I opened the door. Rachel stood there, perfectly put together as always, but her eyes burned with fury. “What the hell is this? You rescue my sister like some knight and now you’re hiding her in your apartment?”
Emily stepped forward. “He saved me from a creep, Rachel. Unlike you, he actually cares.”
Rachel laughed bitterly. “Cares? He’s my ex-husband. You’re crossing a line, little sister. Go home. Now.”
But Emily didn’t move. “I’m not going anywhere. Mark deserves the truth. All of it.”

Rachel’s expression darkened. She lowered her voice, the underlying threat clear. “You say one more word and I’ll make sure both of you regret it. I have messages. Photos. Proof that you were the one who encouraged my affair, Emily. Don’t make me destroy you both.”
A chill ran down my spine. This was the Rachel I remembered from the worst days of our marriage—manipulative, vicious when cornered.
I stepped between them. “Leave her alone, Rachel. We’re done playing your games.”
She smirked. “You think this is a game? I built a new life. A better one. If you two pursue whatever this is, I’ll ruin your reputation, Mark. And Emily… you’ll lose everything I’ve helped you with.”
Emily’s hand found mine again, squeezing tightly. The touch grounded me even as my world tilted further. “I don’t care anymore,” she said. “I love him. I always have.”
Rachel’s face twisted. “You’re both fools.”
She stormed out, but not before shooting me a final warning look. “This isn’t over. Stay away from her.”
That night, Emily stayed. We talked until dawn—about the lies, the guilt, the spark that had always existed between us. By morning, I knew I couldn’t go back to my quiet life. But as we made coffee, her phone buzzed with messages from unknown numbers. Threats. Warnings.

“They’re from Rachel’s boss,” she whispered, her face pale. “The one she had the affair with. He’s powerful. Connected. He doesn’t want any of this coming out.”
My heart pounded. Later that day, while Emily was in the shower, I stepped outside to clear my head. A black sedan was parked across the street. The window rolled down just enough for me to see a man watching my building.
When I went back inside, Emily met me with wide eyes. “Mark… there’s one more thing I haven’t told you. About the baby. It wasn’t terminated. Rachel gave the child up for adoption. And I know who has her.”
My blood ran cold as another car pulled into the lot below—Rachel again, this time with someone else in the passenger seat.
